Key moments so far
- Danny Ings gives Saints the lead WITH A DOUBLE at Fratton Park
- Cédric adds Saints' third before substitute Redmond makes it four
- Brett Pitman went very close to giving the hosts an early lead
- It had been a dominant spell for the League One side before the opener
FULL TIME: Portsmouth 0-4 SAINTS
That went well 😏 What a night for Saints - safely through to the Carabao Cup FOURTH round with FOUR unanswered goals at Fratton Park! Ings (2), Cédric and Redmond were the men on target, as Saints chalked up a FOURTH successive away win without conceding a goal.
IT'S FOUR!!!!
Redmond gets in on the act, carrying the ball deep into Portsmouth territory, stepping inside and rifling an unstoppable shot past MacGillivray! What a night this is turning into 😍
GOOOAL!!!
Nathan Redmond (88’) | 0 – 4
Cédric seals it!
Ings gets away down the left and the ball falls Cédric's way from a Portsmouth tackle. The defender was in unfamiliar territory but didn't show it - he crashes a first-time shot home for number three!
GOOOAL!!!
Cédric (76’) | 0 – 3
Cédric's cross goes uncoverted
Now in the Portsmouth box, Cédric squeezes the ball across the box but no red and white shirt is on hand to finish the job.
Vital block from Cédric
The ball drops kindly for Curtis to try his luck from the edge of the box and he strikes it well, but Cédric sticks out a leg to deflect it wide.
Bertrand's free-kick is overhit
Saints have the chance to deliver a cross into the box, but it's too strong from Bertrand and Obafemi cannot keep it in.
Yellow Card for Ryan Bertrand (Southampton)
Bertrand goes into the book after Yoshida brings down Marquis - presumably for dissent.
Saints survive teasing corner
Williams whips in a fine delivery that Burgess gets a glancing touch to, but the ball flashes across the six-yard box.
Yellow Card for Brett Pitman (Portsmouth)
Now it's Pitman who's carded for bringing down Obafemi. Frustration from the Pompey man, who had just lost possession.
Yellow Card for Oliver Hawkins (Portsmouth)
Hawkins goes into the book for bringing down Ward-Prowse and halting a Saints counter.
Williams fires over
Not for the first time, there's a lack of composure from the home team when they have the chance to pull the trigger, as this time it's Williams who shoots high and wide.
Ward-Prowse's shot is blocked
It's been a controlled start to the second half for Saints, who are enjoying plenty of possession, but Ward-Prowse's shot at the end of it is blocked at close quarters on the edge of the box.
We're back under way...
Let's hope for more of the same in the second half! 💪
HALF TIME: Portsmouth 0-2 SAINTS
Danny Ings's double at Fratton Park gives Saints a comfortable lead at the break in the south coast derby.
GOOOAL!!!
Danny Ings (44’) | 0 – 2
Pompey looking to end the half strong...
Marquis takes aim from distance and fires wide as the hosts look to end the half as strongly as they started the first before Ings's goal.
Ward-Prowse tests the keeper
Ward-Prowse forces a good save from Macgillivary before Adams collects the ball in the box but stumbles and the hosts can clear.
Burgess heads away a cross
Everything good is going through Ings, who switches the play to Cédric and the Portuguese's cross is headed out by Burgess.
Burgess sweeps the ball wide
Pompey keep the ball alive following a corner and thankfully Burgess can't quite steer his effort on target inside the box.
Bertrand's cross evades Ward-Prowse
Bertrand sends in a dangerous looking cross that Ward-Prowse can't quite reach, Curtis brings the ball away and is fouled by Obafemi in his own half.
Højbjerg's effort blocked off the line
Ings's movement causing problems and he gets in again to force a save from Macgillivray, before Højbjerg looks to have put us 2-0 ahead, only for Oli Hawkins to make a BIG block on the line.
GET IN THERE!!!!!
Ings forces a save from Macgillivray, before getting the ball back from Ward-Prowse and he curls the ball beyond the keeper from the edge of the box. WHAT A MOMENT!
GOOOAL!!!
Danny Ings (20’) | 0 – 1
McCarthy somehow keeps it out
Haunstrup's corner is met by the near post run of Pitman, who sees his header saved by McCarthy before Bednarek helps to keep it out. McCarthy then reclaims the ball.
The ball skips away from Ings
Ward-Prowse's cross-field pass is intended for Ings but the ball skips away from his path on a greasy surface and it's a goal kick.
Curtis curls the ball well wide
It's the hosts piling on the early pressure, buoyed by a hostille crowd, but this time Curtis tries to arch a right-footed shot into the far corner and it drifts away.
Pitman draws a fine fingertip save
A deep free-kick is half cleared and Pitman strikes a ferocious volley that forces a brilliant fingertip save from McCarthy.
Marquis hits the post
Williams releases Marquis and he almost catches McCarthy out with a curled, right-footed strike that hits the outside of the post.
Pitman's shot is tame
The ball is headed on to Pitman on the edge of the area, but he controls it before volleying it towards goal and it's easy for McCarthy.
Close is down after Ward-Prowse's challenge
The referee plays an advantage after Close hooks the ball away, before Ward-Prowse catches him late. Cédric clears the ball out for a throw-in that comes to nothing.
Pompey earn a free-kick in their own half
Obafemi concedes a foul inside the Pompey half but the ball is long towards Marquis and Bednarek is able to shepard the ball out.
Yoshida's ball is pursued by Ings but runs out
Saints pressing up the pitch early on. Yoshida plays a ball into the box which Ings is in pursuit of but Burgess sees it out to safety.
