Morgan Threatens To Stop Scoring!

So far in this campaign Schneiderlin has found the back of the net against Manchester United, Swansea City, Wigan Athletic, and now Newcastle United, but the team have only two points from those matches for his efforts.

For a midfielder whose lack of goals used to come more under the spotlight, it’s still considered a surprise when the 23 year-old pops up with a strike as he did in the third minute at St James’ Park on Sunday, but Morgan revealed to Saints Player that someone in the coaching staff had faith in him, which he repaid in his celebration.

He said: “I ran over to Fran Alonso who is Gaston’s translator because yesterday he told me that I would score against Newcastle, so I said, ‘OK if I score I come to you!’ 

“I kept my promise and ran to him, but when you have a ball like that in the box to Lambert one v one then you know he has every chance of winning it, so I just had to be ready for the ball and I went there.

“I’m happy with that, yet still frustrated that every time I score we never win. If we keep drawing or losing then I’m going to stop scoring!”

Schneiderlin was the only Frenchman on the pitch not in a black and white shirt to get the first goal in Newcastle’s ‘French day’ at St James’ Park, and the former Strasbourg youngster was left to reflect on what might have been following a quick start in both halves from the visitors.

“I’m not sure that we were two goals worse than Newcastle,” he highlighted “But I think once we scored our second goal we didn’t play as we should have and it’s just frustrating because when you score two goals away from home you should at least get away with a point.

“We had a chance to score a third goal through Rickie Lambert, but he was unlucky as the ball went wide, so we’ll have to take the positives out of this one because we have a very important game now on Saturday against QPR and that’s our main focus now.

“We didn’t try to get too carried away when we won against Manchester City and today we’ll not get too down about losing in Newcastle, that’s football and sometimes you have an off day. I don’t think we had an off day but we lost the game and now we need to bounce back. 

“We are very confident that we can avoid relegation, and I think we will, but it’s by bouncing back and having a good performance against QPR.”

Despite his threat not to score again, Schneiderlin is currently heading for his best ever return in one season with Southampton, and he admits that it is something he is continuing to work hard at.

“I’m very ambitious and every manager that I have had has told me what to improve on,” he said. “When I first came to England I needed to improve my defensive responsibilities and I did that, then it was OK now start scoring some goals and now I’m trying to do that every day in training and in games.

“I’m very happy that I’ve scored four goals. The gaffer has given me more freedom to get into the box because he knows that I can do it and come back alongside Corky who can drop in when I do that. 

“We have a good partnership and I’m going to try to keep going like that, and hopefully next time I score we’ll win.”
