Manager Eyes More Quality Additions

Mauricio Pochettino is comfortable with how Saints have been conducting their business during the close season.

Speculation is constant now that the transfer window has re-opened, but whilst he has only added one signing so far, the manager is confident that a meticulous approach is working in getting the right players at the club.

"We’re very clear about our goals and [signing Dejan] Lovren was one of our goals," Pochettino highlighted. "We signed him in the way and when we wanted to sign him.

"I think he’s known already. He's played in Lyon for the last four years and played in the Champions League. He's an international footballer too.

"He is a quality player, has a presence on the field and he's good at solving difficult situations. I think his qualities will really suit the Premier League, so we’'e very happy to have him and to add him into this project that we're in now."

One player who Pochettino remains in pursuit of is Celtic’s Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama, but the manager was clear that the club will not be dictated to in an attempt to close the deal.

"I want to make the point that we are Southampton and we make the decisions on when we sign players we set the timings of when to put signings through," Pochettino said.

"There are rumours of different players possibly joining Southampton and a lot of agents as well that have linked us with future players. That just shows that Southampton is a very professional club, a serious club and an ambitious one which is clear from what has been happening in the summer.

"I also want to say that a lot of players want to come to Southampton because Southampton is quite a respected club with a clear path of where it wants to go in the future. That shows that Southampton is a serious club and again shows that we’re the ones setting the schedule of when players are going to come here.

"It’s not just Victor Wanyama that we're looking after," the gaffer added. "There are a couple more players that we are expecting to reach advanced negotiations with. We are very interested in Victor Wanyama and we will see how the situation unfolds in the future.

"I’m not going to speak any more about Wanyama, though. He’s a player that we're after, and a player that we’re talking about bringing to this club.

"The only player I can speak about is Lovren because he is a part of Southampton. Other players have been linked with Southampton but I can't really confirm or reject whether they’'e going to be at Southampton in the future, so that wouldn’t be right. I can only speak about players that we actually have.

"The good thing is that all the players I have heard mentioned are really good footballers, and I think one hundred per cent of those players would be really happy to come here – but perhaps we don’t have a place for all of them!"

The pre-season will also be a big opportunity for Vegard Forren, who is yet to make an appearance in the First Team. Pochettino is keen for the Norwegian to make a big impression, and says he, like all players, will be given a fair opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the starting eleven.

"He is training with us and we're seeing how he evolves during the practice sessions," the manager said.

"We'll see what happens with him and the rest of the players during these early days."
