Pochettino rues missed opportunities

Mauricio Pochettino admitted his frustration that Saints could not finish their chances in today's defeat at Norwich.

Nathan Redmond's 67th-minute strike proved the difference in an evenly-contested game at Carrow Road.

However, Saints carved out a number of opportunities – most notably when Adam Lallana struck the post in the first half – but could not find a way past Canaries goalkeeper John Ruddy.

"I think overall it was the sort of game that we expected," said Pochettino after the match.

"There were chances for Norwich and us throughout the game, but Norwich were able to score theirs when we weren't. Other than that I thought it was pretty balanced.

"We had some clear chances and that is the most frustrating part of the game today – that we weren't able to convert those good chances into goals."

There was a major flashpoint 19 minutes into the game, as Lallana's shot appeared to be handled in the box by Norwich midfielder Bradley Johnson.

However, referee Howard Webb decided to award a penalty, much to the dismay of Saints' players and manager.

"It is clear that the images speak for themselves. We don't need to say anything because it is clear that it is a penalty," insisted Pochettino.

"I felt that would have changed the outcome of the game if it had been given.

"We are not having much luck in terms of decisions of referees at the moment and we have had that since the first game of the season."

It is now 15 days until Southampton's next game, with 12 of the squad heading off on international duty for the majority of that time.

"The break comes when it comes," said the manager when asked whether there was any frustration at having to wait so long until the next fixture.

"We always knew from the calendar when it was coming so we have to accept it, but it will be hard to do much because I think we have only ten players left with us."
