Gastón Ramírez says he is enjoying the high level of competition for places that currently exists within the Saints squad.
The Uruguayan has yet to make a league start this season, but has found the net on both of his appearances in the Capital One Cup.
The second of those strikes came in last night's third-round win over Bristol City, with the Uruguayan slamming in a spectacular 15th-minute opener to set Saints on their way to a 2-0 success.
And the 22-year-old says he is pleased to be putting pressure on those who are currently occupying the starting positions as he seeks to transfer his cup form into the Barclays Premier League.
"The level of the competition is why I like being here," Ramírez told saintsfc.co.uk after last night's match.
"Me and my teammates know that only 11 players can start each game, so everybody is fighting hard to get into the team – myself included.
"I am very happy with how the Bristol City game went," he continued. "I'm primarily happy that the team won, and we played good football and with good quality for much of the game.
"I'm very pleased with my goal for two reasons: firstly because it helped us go on to win the game, but also because it came on my mother's birthday today – that goal was for her, without doubt.
"These games are very important for me to get my confidence back. Now I have to keep working and waiting for my chance in the league."
