Gastón misses out as Uruguay are stunned

Gastón Ramírez was an unused substitute as Uruguay were shocked by Costa Rica in their 2014 FIFA World Cup Group D game this evening.

Despite featuring heavily during La Celeste’s pre-tournament friendlies, the Saints man was dropped to the bench for their first game at the finals.

Uruguay did go ahead at the Estádio Castelão in Fortaleza as Edinson Cavani converted a 24th-minute penalty.

However, Costa Rica hit back after half time as Joel Campbell levelled matters on 54 minutes and Óscar Duarte put them ahead shortly afterwards.

Ramírez looked set to come on just after the hour mark but coach Óscar Tabárez opted for different substitutions.

In the end, the group outsiders were worthy winners, with Marco Ureña making it 3-1 six minutes from time.

Ramírez will now hope for a chance to impress when Uruguay take on England next Thursday. That game takes place at the Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, and gets underway at 8pm BST.
