Steven Davis was delighted to play his part in sealing all three points against Arsenal in what he described as a “massive game” for Southampton.
Goals from Sadio Mané and Dušan Tadić sealed the win, with Davis laying on the assist for the second Saints goal as they maintained their spot in the Premier League top four.
And Davis says Saints spoke before the game about how important a fixture it was in terms of how their season will pan out.
“It was a fantastic win, a perfect birthday present and a great way to start the year,” Davis told Southampton’s official YouTube channel. “I think we were definitely worthy of the three points.
“We had a number of opportunities even after going two-nil ahead and we were disappointed not to kill it off, but I thought as a unit and to a man we defended very well and were very organised.
“We spoke before about how it was a massive game in our season in terms of which way it is going to go. We’re delighted with the three points and now we can build on the momentum we’ve gained recently.
“Results and momentum is massive in football, although we had good performances when we went through a sticky patch, we’re delighted to get back to winning ways. It was a massive game for us today.
“I was delighted to play my part, fortunately it fell to Dušan and he finished it well. I’m delighted with the start to the New Year.”
After losing to a late goal at the Emirates less than a month ago, Davis says it was nice to be able to make up for that with all three points. “There’s no doubt that was a sore one to take,” he added.
“We worked so hard on the night to come away with nothing, but we’ve shown over the course of the season we can compete with the top sides and it was another good building block for us.”
