Koeman: One of our best displays of the season

Ronald Koeman ranked Southampton’s performance in the 2-0 win against Arsenal as one of the best since he arrived at St Mary’s.

Goals from Sadio Mané and Dušan Tadić sealed the win against Arsene Wenger’s side, to move Saints three points ahead of the Gunners in the table.

Koeman was delighted with his side’s display as they kicked off 2015 with an excellent win.

“I am very pleased,” Koeman told the club’s official YouTube channel. “I think the performance of the team was outstanding, in all aspects of football, in the confidence what we had, in the belief that we had for a good result.

“We totally deserved the win. If you see the chances we created, sometimes from mistakes from them, then we had to score more goals and that is a strange feeling after this game.

“It is one of the best performances because to be on the same level, maybe a little better than our opponents Arsenal, that means a lot for everybody.

“The players had that unbelievable belief in a good result and then you have to show it, that’s the most difficult, but it’s very deserved. We had to kill the game after 2-0 with two or three big chances.

“We were outstanding in defence, Fraser Forster had two great saves at important moments in the game and that was very good.”

Mané made it three goals in three games with his opener, and Koeman was full of praise for the Senegalese international. But he is unsure on the extent of the injury that forced him off.

“It was a great goal, it was a difficult position to score out of that. That was an important moment,” he added. “After that, Arsenal had to take more risks and we had to score more goals about the space we got.

“I have to wait until Friday, I don’t know what happened exactly, we will know more then if he is available for Sunday or not.”

Koeman was pleased to see his side up their performance in the second half, and praised yet another clean sheet. He added: “We spoke at half-time about some details in the game.

“In several moments we had some mistakes in our ball possession, that makes them dangerous, they are fast in the transition. In the second half we did those aspects much better than in the first half.

“Maybe one or two chances they had, but I think we had seven or eight good chances to score today, a big difference, a great game, and a fantastic result.”
