Four Southampton players stopped to talk to the assembled media after the New Year’s Day win against Arsenal at St Mary’s.

Here’s what they had to say:

Toby Alderweireld on how belief will continue to grow after the win…

“Of course it is a fantastic result against a big club, the last weeks we weren’t that lucky against those teams and now I think we deserve it by far – especially second half, the organisation was fantastic.

“We gave almost no chances away and we created a lot. The belief is growing, we know we can beat that kind of team and we are convinced in ourselves. This is nice for us and we have to work hard. It’s three points, now we have the FA Cup and then a big game.

“All year the spirit is fantastic. We defended very good, it was very difficult to score against us and up front we have qualities and maybe we could have scored more. We fight every week and we show that we are capable to end in the top four.”

Ryan Bertrand on the fight for a top four finish after the win…

“It’s a big win. People have been waiting for us to beat one of the so-called top four teams, so there you go. There was that belief a long time ago, we have good quality in our team and if we can perform week in, week out, we can definitely achieve that.

“The win doesn’t change a thing, to be honest, it’s the same as what it was months ago. Even if you look back at the previous game when we played Arsenal, we shouldn’t have lost that game. The mentality stays the same.

“We remain in the same mind set, we continue to go out and get as many wins as we can.”

Victor Wanyama on getting a first win against one of the big teams…

“I think we have been working hard and we have played big teams and we deserved something, but we showed the spirit that we have, that we want to fight through the whole way and it was an important three points.

“We had a lot of chances. It could have been four, you know, but we’re happy we took our chances a little bit and we’ve gained the points. It’s important, we’re happy opening the year with a win.

“We know now people are going to talk, but we know what we can do and we just want to keep our feet down and finish strong. If we stay in the top four then that will be a big achievement but at the moment we just want to win as many games as possible.”

Florin Gardos on the win against the Gunners and competition for places…

“Of course, to win 2-0 against Arsenal is a really good result. I think the team had good organisation, we were concentrating and we did a good job. It was really important. This was a critical part of the season, especially December and the beginning of January. Arsenal is a big team so it is a big win.

“I think our position is the biggest competition, unfortunately I was a bit ill and I had to go off. We are a team and we help each other. Sometimes maybe I can play, he [Maya Yoshida] can play. It’s nice to be in this group.

“We have to remain concentrated, but I think we have a good chance [of finishing in the top four].”
