Southampton’s season began with a narrow, and undeserved, defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

The hosts opened the scoring through Raheem Sterling, but Ronald Koeman’s side responded excellently after half-time, with Nathaniel Clyne equalising.

Steven Davis had a great chance to give Saints the lead but after his miss, Daniel Sturridge tapped home to restore the lead for Liverpool. Debutant Shane Long went close late on, but Brendan Rodgers’ side held on for the win.
