U21 REACTION: Gazzaniga satisfied with Spurs shut-out

Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga hailed the defensive display that helped Southampton Under-21s get a point against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.

The Argentinian, 23, kept a clean sheet in the goalless draw at St Mary’s, and afterwards spoke of the importance of a shut-out, especially after a second half in which Spurs piled on the pressure.

“It was a very difficult game – very tough – but the positive thing is we kept a clean sheet and we’re still up near the top of the table,” said the former Gillingham custodian.

“A clean sheet, in the first team or in the Under-21s, is always important, and is good for the team as well because we have a point to go with the clean sheet as well.

“It’s my job – I have to be there – and if the ball comes to me, I try to keep it out in the easiest way.

“I think the four at the back did play well and they helped us keep the clean sheet as well.”

Gazzaniga has returned between the sticks for Martin Hunter’s side’s last two outings, which have both ended in wins for the Saints – firstly against Watford, in the Under-21 Premier League Cup, and then against Ugo Ehiogu’s Tottenham on Monday.

The Santa Fe-born gloveman is happy to have got some much-needed game time under his belt, and says he’s looking forward to next Thursday’s cup semi-final at home to Derby County, though he’s not yet certain whether or not he’ll be involved against the Rams.

“I’m really happy. It gives me confidence because it’s important to play week by week, and it’s always important to get some minutes, with the 21s or the first team or whoever,” he said.

“It’s a massive, massive game (against Derby County). It’s a semi-final, and I think the lads are really happy that we’re in it, and we want to do everything we possibly can to win the game.

“I don’t know if I’m going to play, but I’m happy for the lads as well, because they are working very hard every week.”
