By SFC Media time Thu 30 Apr Club

Get to know more about Sunderland, Southampton's opponents in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday, with ten facts about the Black Cats.

– Sunderland were close to changing their nickname when they moved to the Stadium of Light. However, supporters held a vote and they remained the Black Cats.

– In 1999, Sunderland broke the record for the most points gained in a Championship season, picking up 105 on their way to promotion. This was then topped by Reading seven years later (106).

– Since their formation in 1879, Sunderland have won six First Division titles, with the latest of those coming in 1936. They also won the title in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902 and 1913.

– Sunderland were the first club to enter the Football League after the 12 founder members when they replaced Stoke City for the 1890/91 season.

– The Black Cats have spent just one season out of the top two tiers of English football. Sunderland won the league during their one season in the third tier in 1987/88.

– Sunderland, thanks to their FA Cup win in 1973, were named as the Sports Personality Team of the Year.

– After winning the league title in 1895, Sunderland played Scottish champions Heart of Midlothian in a game described as the ‘Championship of the World’ title match. The Black Cats won 5-3, and were announced champions of the world.

– Ivor Broadis became the first manager ever to transfer himself. In charge of Carlisle United in 1949, he sold himself to Sunderland for a fee of £18,000.

– Sunderland played in an all blue kit from their formation up until 1884, when they adopted a red and white halved strip. They moved to the now famous red and white stripes ahead of the 1987/88 season.

– Southampton’s 8-0 win against Sunderland at St Mary’s was the joint-heaviest league defeat ever suffered by the Black Cats. Only Sheffield Wednesday in 1911 and West Ham United in 1968 have matched that scoreline.
