Ronald Koeman says it will be a special occasion when Southampton take on Feyenoord at De Kuip on Thursday evening.
Koeman spent three years in charge of the Dutch outfit before moving to England with Saints, but he’ll be back at De Kuip in the opposition dugout on Thursday.
With the likes of Jordy Clasie and Graziano Pellè also set for an emotional return, Koeman says it’s going to be a fantastic moment for everyone.
“I personally have a great feeling with that club – the crowd and the people,” Koeman told Southampton’s official YouTube channel ahead of the game. “It’s sold out. It will be a good ambience to play football.
“Of course some players in Southampton played in Holland and for Feyenoord. Also for them it will be a special day.
“I was three years the coach of Feyenoord. We had a difficult start because the finances of Feyenoord were poor. We had to do it with young academy players but we had three good seasons in a row and it was a great time.
“The crowd will be crazy about Clasie and Pellè because Clasie was a young kid in the academy of Feyenoord and Graziano had two great seasons and scored a lot of goals. Both players were really popular with the crowd.”
With over 50,000 fans expected at De Kuip on Thursday night, Koeman says there will be an incredible atmosphere inside the stadium.
“It’s very intense there,” he recalls. “It’s sometimes difficult for the opponent to be themselves. Really the crowd are very intense.
“It’s a friendly and they like Southampton, they like some of the players of Southampton. Maybe it will be different but they will always be behind the team and push and support the team like our fans in Southampton.”
