Maya Yoshida says his goal in Southampton’s win against Feyenoord was down to Graziano Pellè’s hair gel!
The defender scored the second goal for Ronald Koeman’s side in the convincing victory against their Dutch opposition at De Kuip on Thursday night.
Yoshida rose highest to head home a free-kick from Steven Davis, and says the team have been working hard to improve from attacking set-pieces during pre-season.
“Defensively we have done well from set pieces. Offensively we need a little bit more,” Yoshida told youtube.com/southamptonfc. “I think so far, so good.
“We have good takers of set-pieces so we need to score more. A Dutch team is not the same as a team from England, they will be physically tougher but we have to try and improve.
“I got Graziano’s gel for the game and he said to me ‘for sure you’re going to score’. Maybe next time I’ll use it again.
Yoshida, who spent three years in Holland with VVV Venlo, says it was the perfect way to sign off ahead of the Europa League starting next Thursday.
“We have to keep continuing like this. We have some new players but we’re in a good way,” Yoshida added. “Next week we have the qualifying round for the Europa League.
“As the manager said before Feyenoord, we have to be ready and start from this game. It was good preparation for the qualifying game.
“I feel we’re getting better now. We still need to improve. We lost the ball too much in the last ten minutes and even after 3-0 we should have controlled the game better.
“But it was very good to be in one of the best stadiums in Holland, of course to score and to make a clean sheet.”
