Sadio Mané was pleased to open his Premier League account for the season in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Swansea City.

Mané rolled home the third goal of the game for Saints to help the team to their second league win of the campaign and see them move level on points with the Swans.

The Senegalese’s strike was his fourth goal of the season in all competitions but his first in league – which came as a relief to the forward.

“Yeah, I’m happy,” he said of the goal, “because every player wants to score.

“But it was more important for the team – you score for the team.”

After a difficult start to the season on a personal and team level, Mané says he's happy to now be focusing on the football as Saints look to progress in the Capital One Cup and move up the league table.

“Yeah, but it is important because I’m here in Southampton,” he said. “I’m happy here, but at the beginning we have some difficulties, but it’s football you need to forget it and keep going and work hard.

“In football we always have, like this, many of you move but I have a contract with Southampton and I’m happy here, the fans like me, which means I’m doing my job properly.

“I’m happy here, that’s the most important.”

Mané also praised the way in which Saints’ new singings have adapted to the squad, and is impressed with the quality at Ronald Koeman’s disposal.

“The more important thing is that they’re here with us,” he added. “They also have many qualities and this is good for the team and I’m happy for them.

“They are doing well.”
