Targett: Old Trafford win will live with me forever

Saints defender Matt Targett says last Saturday’s 1-0 win away to Manchester United is a memory that will live with him forever and is one he hopes could be a springboard towards Europe.

The 20-year-old played the entire game at Old Trafford, as Ronald Koeman’s side won at the iconic stadium for the second season running in the Premier League.

"It was a very special moment,” Targett told “It's not often that a Southampton team goes to Old Trafford and wins, so it was great to be a part of it.

"We knew that they weren't in the best of form, they're struggling to score goals, and our job was to frustrate them and try to nick one late, and Charlie Austin came on and he did that.”

Eastleigh-born Targett added: “I think being a local lad you always want your team to do well, and going to a place like Old Trafford and bringing home three points is a special memory that I will remember forever.”

Targett, who has played at left wing-back in each of the last three Premier League games, all of which Saints have kept clean sheets in, hopes the victory can help provide impetus to the side's hopes of achieving another European place.

"It's great to get a late goal,” he said. “It gives us the confidence that we can go anywhere and win.

"I think it's put us right back on track for where we want to be. I think we're only looking ahead now, so hopefully we can qualify for the Europa League again.”
