A visit to the Emirates Stadium has already delivered one fantastic memory for Matt Targett, and the Saints defender hopes this Tuesday's trip will bring another one.
Targett started in the 2-1 Capital One Cup victory away to Arsenal last season, which remains the only time the club have won at the Gunners’ current ground.
Ronald Koeman’s men will look to add to that success when they head to the Emirates Stadium this week for a Premier League clash, as they bid to win a fourth consecutive game.
Targett played 85 minutes in the September 2014 victory, as a Dušan Tadić penalty and Nathaniel Clyne’s thunderbolt overcame Alexis Sánchez’s early free-kick, and he retains fond memories of that evening.
"It was a great night,” the 20-year-old told youtube.com/southamptonfc. “I remember all the travelling fans took most of the away end behind the goal, so it was good support that night. Clyney came up with a fantastic strike to put us 2-1 up. It was a great night.”
Saints will head to the Emirates Stadium with plenty of confidence this Tuesday, having won their last three matches, without conceding a goal – a run capped by last weekend’s 1-0 victory away to Manchester United.
While they also have the memory of beating Arsenal 4-0 at St Mary's on Boxing Day, Targett says their belief will also be balanced by a great respect for Arsène Wenger's side.
"The form we're in at the moment, I think we can beat anyone in the division, so it's important that we go there with confidence, but we need to be wary as Arsenal are such a good team,” said Targett, who has impressed in a left wing-back role over the past few weeks.
"It would be a massive result if we could go there and get a win or a draw. I think it would give us confidence going forward and we can take it from there.
“I think it's West Ham after that, so we can go into that game with our heads held high and just play our football.”
