Austin: Bournemouth helped my career

Charlie Austin credits Bournemouth and their manager, Eddie Howe, for playing an important part in his development as a player – but he intends to do them no favours tonight.

Saints striker Austin had a trial at the Cherries when he was playing in the Wessex League with Poole Town, going on to spend a six-week period training with the club during pre-season in 2009.

Bournemouth and Howe wanted to sign the forward but, under a transfer embargo at the time, they were unable to.

Instead, Austin went on to join Swindon Town, before progressing on to Burnley, QPR and, ultimately, Southampton. But he still reflects on his short spell at the Cherries with fondness.

"It was very important,” Austin told Southampton’s official YouTube channel of his time there, ahead of this evening's Barclays Premier League clash at Vitality Stadium.

“I think that gave me the stepping stone from where I went onto Swindon and to bigger and better things.

“I've always said if I didn't go there for those six weeks and train pre-season I don't think it would have given me the foundation to move on up the leagues.”

Austin also holds Howe, who he played for during his time at Burnley, and his assistant Jason Tindall in extremely high regard.

"They've been very good,” he said. “When I went there, they worked on a lot of things on the training pitch for me – on and off it to be honest with you. They brought me on as a man. So I was delighted to work with them, but come Tuesday night hopefully I can get three points off of them.

"There's a past association, but I'm just concentrating on playing for Southampton and hopefully we can come away with the three points for the team.”
