Davis helps Northern Ireland to new record

Steven Davis captained Northern Ireland who beat Slovenia 1-0 at Windsor Park on Monday evening, to set a new record for their longest ever run without suffering a defeat.

The only goal of the game arrived just before half-time through QPR striker Conor Washington, and the clean sheet at the other end was preserved by goalkeeper Roy Carroll, who saved a 64th minute spot kick from Milivoje Novakovic.

Davis was one of only three players on the home side to complete the 90 minutes as Northern Ireland, who had also won two of their previous four meetings with Slovenia by a one goal margin, repeated the trick.

They not only set a new unbeaten record, but also extended an impressive run of seven home games without defeat, conceding only three goals in that time.

The final two friendlies for Michael O’Neill’s men prior to the Euro 2016 finals in France will be at home to Belarus on 27 May and away to Slovakia on 4 June.
