Stephens and Targett help England U21s to Toulon final

By SFC Media time Fri 27 May Club

Jack Stephens and Matt Targett both started in the England Under-21s side that beat Japan’s Under-23s to reach the final of the Toulon Tournament.

The Saints defenders helped Gareth Southgate’s Young Lions to a 1-0 win in France – the team’s fourth successive victory in Group B of the competition – to secure a place in Sunday’s final.

Prior to this game, England had beaten Portugal, Guinea and Paraguay over the past seven days.

The deadlock in this contest was broken from the penalty spot in the 15th minute after Chelsea midfielder John Swift was shoved over by Hiromu Mitsumaru in the box.

Swift’s Chelsea teammate Lewis Baker stepped up to roll the penalty home, with England holding out to guarantee a place in the final against Czech Republic or France.

Saints’ other representative in the squad, James Ward-Prowse, was an unused substitute.
