McCarthy delighted with loan experience

Jason McCarthy says he enjoyed every minute of his loan spell at League 2 side Wycombe Wanderers this season.

The defender made 39 appearances in total for Gareth Ainsworth’s side after joining the Chairboys in October, initially on a short-term loan deal.

He went on to become an important member of the team, and despite just missing out on the play-off places, McCarthy says he was very grateful for the opportunity.

“I absolutely loved it. The manager was great to work with and brilliant to me. He played me in every single game, so I couldn’t have asked for much more,” McCarthy told

“My teammates were brilliant too. We had a good mix of more experienced players and then a few younger ones too. I was the youngest, but it was a good mix.

“We were unfortunate to fall just short in the end, but I absolutely loved my time there. I played across the back four, in midfield and even in goal for ten minutes!

“The manager but his trust in me and I enjoyed the challenge of trying to be effective in every position.”

McCarthy believes he’ll be returning for pre-season with Saints later this summer an improved player. He added: “I think Southampton are definitely getting a better player back.

“My game understanding and management have both improved. I’ve really developed my physical side of the game and dealt with the tempo too.

“I embraced the challenge and I’m definitely a better player for having gone to Wycombe.”
