José Fonte played nearly an hour at Wembley Stadium tonight, but fellow Saints teammates Fraser Forster and Cédric were unused subs, as Portugal lost 1-0 to England.
Fonte was introduced for the visitors in the 38th minute for Rafa Silva, shortly after Bruno Alves had been sent off for an extremely high-footed challenge on Harry Kane.
The Southampton captain played alongside Ricardo Carvalho at the heart of defence, putting in a resolute performance, helping limit England to little other than half chances until Chris Smalling headed in a Raheem Sterling cross with four minutes left.
Earlier, Fonte had come close to contributing at the other end, as he nearly got on the end of a João Moutinho corner in the 54th minute.
Fonte’s Saints and Portugal teammate, Cédric, was an unused substitute for the visitors.
Forster, who played in England's 2-1 win over Australia last week, did not feature at Wembley either, as Joe Hart played the full 90 minutes in goal for Roy Hodgson's men.
The match concluded England’s preparations for the EUROs, with attention now turning to their opening group game, against Russia, on Saturday 11th June.
Portugal have one more warm-up match before this summer’s tournament, as they host Estonia next Wednesday, when both Fonte and Cédric will hope to have an opportunity to strengthen their claims for a starting role in the side.
