Davis: I'm delighted to be staying

Kelvin Davis says he is delighted to be remaining a part of Southampton, after being appointed as the club’s new Football Development Executive.

Davis joins the backroom staff after finishing a ten-year playing career at Saints, which culminated in his testimonial match, in May.

The former goalkeeper will be providing support to the club’s professionals and youngsters, while working closely with manager Claude Puel and also acting as an ambassador for Southampton, while developing his coaching qualifications.

Davis told youtube.com/southamptonfc that he was thrilled his association with the club will continue.

“It’s great for me,” he said. “It’s something that we’ve been speaking about for some time. If I’m going to not be on the pitch, it’s great to still be around the club and keep supporting and contribute where I can.

“It’s a very interesting role. The main part is really to communicate with the manager and make sure the first team are where they need to be and making sure there’s good communication between the dressing room and the manager himself – that’s a large part of the role.”

Davis is also excited about the prospect of helping the club’s young players who are pushing towards the first-team, as well as being a point of contact for those who go out on loan.

“There’s a mentor role in there,” he explained. “Being at the club for as long as I have, and the experience I’ve got, it’s more trying to pass that on and hope that the younger lads coming into the dressing room can adapt quickly and also keep an eye on any of the guys who go out on loan as well.

“It’s a contact that I think is needed and one that a lot of clubs in our division have got and it’s an opportunity for me to work on certain skills of the game as well.”

Davis is also pleased to be able to continue working towards improving his coaching skills.

“That’s almost a personal development side,” he said. “That’s there to give me the skills and ability to go on and be a coach and I think that’s very important with the career I’ve had to continue down that road.”
