Claude Puel was pleased to see his Southampton players round off their pre-season trip to Holland with a 1-0 win against FC Groningen.

Puel’s side beat ten-man FC Groningen at the Euroborg on Saturday thanks to Charlie Austin’s late goal, as they made it a hat-trick of successes in the Netherlands.

The Saints boss admitted tiredness was a factor for his players after a tough week in Holland, but was happy with their efforts against Groningen.

With the hosts reduced to ten men, Puel says it's difficult to take too much from the win against the Eredivisie side.

“It’s always a good thing to win every game, but I think for this game it was very difficult because I think that my players are tired,” Puel told youtube.com/southamptonfc.

“It was difficult to find the patterns between the players. It was an interesting game but I prefer if we finish the game 11 against 11.

“It’s a pity that the Groningen player takes a red card, because for a friendly game that’s always a pity.

“It was just attack against defence. It was difficult. It wasn’t a good game but it was a good thing to win the three games.

“The first two games were very interesting, and the third with the tiredness of the players, it was a good thing to win still.”
