Loan Watch: Memorable win for McCarthy

Southampton defender Jason McCarthy helped Walsall to a second successive clean sheet in four days, as they won 1-0 away to high-flying Sheffield United.

The Saddlers followed up their goalless draw at home to Southend on Saturday with victory against the Blades, in a match that had been postponed from earlier in the season due to international call-ups.

Sheffield United had come into the match on a 15-game unbeaten run in League One, which extended back to August and had taken them up to third in the table.

Walsall, by contrast, began the night in 17th, but climbed up one spot after taking all three points.

Manager Jon Whitney deployed McCarthy as a right-wing back at Bramall Lane, and he again impressed, helping the visitors blank their opponents.

It wasn’t always simple, with keeper Neil Etheridge having to save a late penalty from former Saints forward Billy Sharp, while the home side also had two second-half goals disallowed.

But Amadou Bakayoko’s goal three minutes before half-time, as he prodded home from Erhun Oztumer’s ball over the top, would indeed prove enough to secure a big win for McCarthy and his teammates.
