Bertrand embraces Liverpool challenge

Ryan Bertrand says Southampton will have no fear when they take on Liverpool in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.

Saints stormed into the last four of the competition tonight by winning 2-0 away to Arsenal, with their reward being a two-legged clash against the Reds in the last four.

Bertrand, who netted the second goal at Emirates Stadium, said there was no concern over who they were pitted against – only that they made it to the semi-finals.

"To win silverware you're going to have to play the best teams, so there's no hiding," he said.

"We'd have played anyone before that, so we weren't hoping to get a lesser opponent or anything like that. The draw didn't matter to us."

Bertrand, who already has a Champions League winner's medal from his time at Chelsea, knows as well as anyone how important it is to try to take full advantage of any opportunities that present themselves in cup competitions.

"It means a lot," he said. "Now the stakes get a bit higher. We've got two legs, so we have to be smart and really show our experience over the two legs.

"Getting to the final and getting your hands on that silverware doesn't come around too often and I think it's not overdue for the club, but it's probably about the right time.
