Shane Long says there is a fervent desire to add silverware to Southampton’s progression in recent years and avenge previous disappointment in the EFL Cup.
Long was involved in quarter-final defeats to Sheffield United and Liverpool in the last two campaigns, and he is feels there is no reason Saints can’t reach their first semi-final in the competition since 1987, when they take on Arsenal.
“It has been disappointing. I haven’t got much silverware in my career, I managed to win the Championship but there haven’t been many finals I’ve been involved in,” Long said.
“We’ve got a lot of competitions this year where we can really push to achieve something special for the club.
“The way Southampton has come on in the last few years, I think it deserves a bit of silverware and this is a great opportunity for us.
“It’s going to be a hard game because it’s a big club obviously Arsenal with a big history.
“They’ve a good history of doing well in this cup so it’s going to take a big effort from the lads but I’m confident we can get the win.”
