Radhi Jaïdi has urged Southampton Under-23s to take their chance to progress in the Premier League Cup ahead of Tuesday’s tie with Newcastle United.
Saints make the long trip north knowing that they only need to avoid defeat to qualify from the group stage, but Jaïdi is aware of the challenge that will face them.
“We’ve said before that it is a competition we want to go as far as possible in,” he started.
“We are in a good position now to go into the next round if we win or draw, so hopefully we will go to Newcastle, compete and take that chance.
“But we have seen so far how competitive this group has been. Everyone is trying to take their chance in this competition, so it will be a testing but good experience for our boys.”
The Under-23s head into the cup tie off the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Everton in the Premier League 2.
And Jaïdi has called to see a response from his players on Tuesday.
“We are looking for a reaction,” he continued.
“It has been difficult, definitely. We didn’t take our opportunities against Everton so we want to see them bounce back.
“This is what it is all about though and we have spoken about it enough with the boys - I am confident they know what is required to push to the next level.”
