Southampton Under-23s coach Radhi Jaïdi was left frustrated after he saw his side suffer a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League Cup.
Saints went into their final group fixture knowing a win or a draw would see them progress, but a second-half double from substitute Luke Charman means they must wait.
Jaïdi reflected: “We were sloppy all over the pitch. I think we had a great chance in the first-half, where we had the time and space to play on, but we didn’t get that opportunity.
“We were giving away too many balls and we got them into the game I thought, and we didn’t do enough.
“If you want to win games, you need to be on the front foot, doing everything with intensity. When we defend, you have to be pressing with intensity and with the ball you have to be more aggressive.
“This was an opportunity for us to top the group and I’m so disappointed but even more so with the way we lost the game.
"It's not them these kind of performances because we have better players than that and we know we can do better."
