Southampton boss Claude Puel has praised the influence of club captain Steven Davis, ahead of this weekend’s clash against AFC Bournemouth.

Davis came off the bench to play an instrumental role in the 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture at the Vitality Stadium in December.

And Puel believes that with both his and Virgil van Dijk’s leadership qualities, the club are in safe hands moving forwards.

He said: “It was important when José Fonte left the club, to have a good leadership in the squad.

“With Davis and Van Dijk it’s two good captains and he is the captain for the squad, who gives a good atmosphere and spirit.

“Virgil is a captain for the example he sets on the pitch because he’s also fantastic.

"I think with these two captains we can do good work and we can prepare for the future.”
