Ahead of Southampton's trip to Anfield, Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce gives us the inside track on the Reds...

How would you sum up the mood and form at Liverpool at the moment?

The mood is buoyant after that narrow win at Watford on Monday night. It felt like a pivotal night in the club's season.

They had the opportunity to take advantage of their top-four rivals dropping points the day before and they took it. The fact that victory was achieved courtesy of a spectacular goal from Emre Can made it all the sweeter.

Liverpool's form hasn't been great. They aren't playing the free flowing football of earlier in the season but they are grinding out results.

The defeat to Crystal Palace was a blow but either side of that they have dug deep to seal away wins at Stoke, West Brom and Watford.

How important is this game in the context of the season, particularly with Champions League aspirations?

It's huge. Liverpool's top-four fate is in their own hands but to ensure that remains the case they need to beat Saints.

Having seen Saints keep three clean sheets against his side, what do you think Jurgen Klopp’s approach will be like?

Liverpool have struggled to break Saints down in the previous meetings this season but I don't think Klopp will change his approach.

The Reds will be positive and play on the front foot but the manager won't want to over-commit attacking wise for fear of getting caught out on the counter.

Adam Lallana is in contention to return to the starting line up and that should help give Liverpool more of a cutting edge in the final third.

How do you see the game going?

I can't see there being many goals. It will be tight and nervy. But I just think Liverpool have so much more to play for at this stage of the season and that motivation should see them home. Liverpool to edge it 1-0.
