Claude Puel has stressed the importance of Southampton’s final five games of the season in determining how the campaign will be viewed.

Saints head to Liverpool today, as they continue their bid to finish in the top half of the Premier League for a fourth consecutive campaign.

With Arsenal, Middlesbrough, Manchester United and Stoke to follow the trip to Anfield, Puel has underlined how much these games could mean.

"It was a good week, with good training sessions and good work, with concentration, and this is very important,” he said. "It's important at the end of the season, because all these next games can validate a good season on the pitch, with great games, although without sometimes the good reward.

"But it's been interesting that we can see many players improve, like Redmond and Ward-Prowse, who are in the national team now. There has been good work for all the squad and it will be important to validate all this with good last results."

Despite being unbeaten in their three games against Liverpool so far this season, Puel knows this will be a tough test for them.

"We know this team,” he said. "We play against great players. They're a great team and they play with intensity and quality. They attack, they create a lot of chances every game and it will be important to stay with a good organisation and to keep good concentration, because they can attack with many players.

"The midfield participate a lot for the attack, but it's always important to play these games against great teams away, but it's not a problem for us. We know we can produce a fantastic game and it will be important to have our best level on Sunday."
