Shane Long believes Saints deserved at least a point and should take heart from Saturday’s narrow home defeat against Manchester United.
Saints demonstrated resilience and graft to put the visitors on the back foot for the majority of the game following Romelu Lukaku’s 20th-minute opener and will consider themselves unlucky not to have given a sellout St.Mary’s something more to cheer.
“I thought we deserved more from the game,” Long said.
“United are a very good side, they have quality all over the pitch and are dangerous from set pieces. To limit them to one goal is a credit to our performance and it’s a shame that we just couldn’t find an equaliser at the other end.”
A disappointing result then but a performance on which Mauricio Pellegrino’s men can build before they travel to Stoke in the final fixture before the international break next weekend.
“There are a lot of positives to take. We’ve struggled to create recently but that wasn’t the case today; I was inches from getting on the end of something on a few occasions and (Oriol) Romeu put one just past the post. The boys put in a great shift out there.
“We can kick on to next week knowing how well we performed here this afternoon.”
