In a mixed Sunday afternoon for Saints in Brighton, James Ward-Prowse believes that a draw was the right result at the Amex Stadium.
The midfielder’s curling free-kick played a significant part in Steven Davis’ opening goal on seven minutes but Southampton struggled to penetrate the home defence thereafter.
“I work hard to improve on my set pieces so I was pleased to be given that responsibility today. Unfortunately it didn’t go in for me but Davo did brilliantly to score on the rebound.
“We dropped off once we got in front. We did well in parts but overall but we’re disappointed that we’re not leaving with all three points. On balance, we didn’t do enough to win the game so a draw is a fair result.”
That point was enough to lift Mauricio Pellegrino’s men up to ninth in the Premier League table. For Ward Prowse, it is a position from which another push for the Europa League places should not be out of the question.
“We’ve improved in a lot of areas this season and I am confident that our goalscoring edge will return.
“Getting back into Europe should be our target; this club is built to compete on that stage. We achieved it a couple of years ago and there’s no reason why we can’t do that again this time."
