Mauricio Pellegrino admits there are lessons to be learned from Southampton’s inability to convert an early lead into three points at Brighton.
It was a dream start for Saints, as James Ward-Prowse’s seventh-minute free kick struck the crossbar and fell perfectly for Steven Davis to nod in the opener.
But chances proved few and far between for both sides, and the Seagulls drew level at the start of the second half through Glenn Murray’s far-post header.
“It was a really tight game with not too many chances for either team,” Pellegrino said.
“We have one point and the good thing is that we competed well, but at the same time we have to learn to play with more determination to score the second one earlier in this type of situation.
“We have to learn to build the game when we have that opportunity, because in the Premier League all of the teams have got the quality to create problems.
“It’s not a good moment to play against Brighton away because they are really high mentally and physically.
“At the beginning we were okay and in control, doing well positionally and playing with tempo.
“But we have to be more clinical and convert good starts into goals.”
