A strong first-half performance from Saints was let down by a weaker second as the spoils were shared with Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.
Speaking after the 1-1 draw, Southampton’s Wesley Hoedt expressed his disappointment that the visitors did not leave Brighton with all three points, particularly after Steven Davis’ second goal of the season had given them a seventh-minute lead.
“We started really well and deserved to be in front,” the Dutchman said. “After that, we dropped too deep and didn’t play to our strengths.
“We didn’t put enough pressure on their backline; they pressed harder than we did and that’s why they earned a point.”
A strong start at both ends of the field from Mauricio Pellegrino’s men hinted at a second consecutive Premier League victory on the south coast, only for Brighton to rally after the interval.
“We didn’t give anything away in the first half. After the restart, we were sloppy and were punished with the equaliser, which was one of their only big opportunities of the game.”
For Wesley then, a matter of two points dropped rather than one gained.
“We’ve let slip more points that we would have liked in the first 10 matches of the season but it’s up to us to turn that around as quickly as possible.
“Personally, it was great to get out there again this afternoon. I think there’s potential in our defence, not only between myself and Virgil but with all the other centre-backs in the squad.”
