Alex McCarthy is relishing his first crack at the Premier League in a Southampton shirt.

The goalkeeper had prior top-flight experience with former clubs Reading, QPR and Crystal Palace, but had only been used in cup competitions by Saints until recently, following his move from Palace 18 months ago.

McCarthy has now started Saints’ last eight league matches and finished on the losing side only twice, also conceding just one goal in the team’s three Emirates FA Cup wins.

“I want to be playing week in, week out,” he said. “That’s my main objective.

“I’m enjoying it lots. I’ve had a bit of game time this season, which has been nice, and I just want to stay in the team as long as possible.”

McCarthy was speaking after the 1-1 draw at Burnley, where substitute Manolo Gabbiadini equalised in the very last minute of normal time to snatch a share of the spoils.

“From getting a point here today, we can take the positives out of it into Stoke next week,” McCarthy continued.

“We’ll regroup as a team, work hard on the training ground and prepare ourselves as best we can for Stoke.”
