Radhi Jaïdi is targeting top spot in the Premier League Cup as Southampton Under-23s travel to Group B table-toppers Blackburn in the final round of fixtures tonight.
With both teams already assured of progression to the last 16, only leadership of the group remains to be decided.
The young Saints lifted the trophy back in 2015, and Jaïdi is determined to lay down a marker in pursuit of a repeat triumph.
“We want to win the game to be at the top, to hopefully give us more chance to play at home,” he said.
“We said from the start we want to go as far as possible in this competition.
“We won this cup a couple of years ago and we want to repeat the memory, so hopefully we can achieve that.”
Free-scoring Saints have won four of their last five games in all competitions, most recently trouncing Newcastle 5-1 away from home.
“The confidence is high, but what is more interesting is that the boys have started to pick up all the details that we’ve been working on since the start of the season,” Jaïdi explained.
“We’ve worked on the game management, more maturation and understanding the requirements of each situation, imposing our game and playing our football, creating chances and scoring goals.
“That’s what we’ve been doing and that lifts the confidence, giving us more wins on the board and pushing us into a better situation.”
