Dušan Tadić says Southampton’s players must shoulder the entirety of the blame for the situation they are in, and stressed they need to fight back in order to overcome the shame they felt at West Ham.

Saints’ troubles deepened with a 3-0 defeat at London Stadium, with all of the home side’s goals arriving before half-time, and Tadić admitted to reporters afterwards that it was difficult to put the performance into words.

“It’s very hard to talk. We feel ashamed,” he told journalists in the mixed zone at London Stadium. “It’s a very bad feeling and we have to take responsibility. It’s just our mistakes, all of the players. It’s not the mistake of somebody else, it’s just our mistake.

“We need to be men, we need to take responsibility and to know what kind of situation we are in.

“I’ve been here when we had the best results of all time for Southampton and personally I feel very ashamed and it’s a very tough moment.”

Saints and new boss Mark Hughes have seven games left to escape from trouble, with the side remaining in the relegation zone after the weekend's defeat.

Tadić added: “It’s not the fault of the coach, it’s not the fault of the fans. It’s not the fault of anyone else, it’s just our fault.

“With the new coach we start to train better on the pitch, but, still, when we come out onto the pitch on a Saturday we have to take responsibility.

"It’s a tough moment. But we have to show we are men. We need to fight."
