It was a successful weekend for Saints defender Matt Targett, as he helped loan club Fulham win promotion to the Premier League at Wembley.

Slaviša Jokanović’s men took the lead on 23 minutes, when Tom Cairney latched on to Ryan Sessegnon’s through ball, before steadying himself to finish neatly with his left foot.

Targett played the duration of the contest, and helped Fulham preserve their advantage manfully after they had seen Denis Odoi sent off for two bookable offences.

Villa applied pressure late on but could not find a way through and were frustrated when they didn’t get a penalty after Jack Grealish had gone down under pressure from Targett inside the box.

The Saints full-back will now return to St Mary’s, after a successful loan spell that saw him play 21 times and register his first senior goal in a 1-1 draw with Bolton Wanderers.
