Jan Bednarek netted his first international for Poland as they triumphed 1-0 over Maya Yoshida’s Japan in World Cup Group H.
Bednarek broke the deadlock on 59 minutes as he side-footed home Rafał Kurzawa’s inviting free-kick from the left.
News soon filtered through that Colombia had taken the lead against Senegal in Samara, meaning Yoshida’s Japan would also progress due to the fair play rule.
Yerry Mina’s goal in that clash was enough for Akira Nishino’s men as the game petered out.
The results mean that Colombia qualified as group winners, with Japan in second and Poland bowing out in the group stage.
England will face either of those sides in the round of 16, dependent upon the outcome of their clash with Belgium later tonight.
