Saints full-back Cédric watched on as Portugal were knocked out of the World Cup at the round of 16 stage after a 2-1 defeat to Uruguay in Sochi.

Fernando Santos’s men fell behind early on when Edinson Cavani’s crossfield pass found Luis Suarez on left, who delivered a beautiful cross for Cavani to head home.

That was the way it stayed until the break, but early in the second-half Portugal pressed and probed before reaping the rewards from that spell of dominance on 55 minutes.

Joao Mario’s short corner to Raphael Guerreiro saw the ball whipped in from the left, with Pepe ghosting into space and planting a powerful header past Fernando Muslera.

But Cavani responded just after the hour mark with another wonderful goal. Rodrigo Bentacur received Muslera’s long ball down field before sliding the ball into the PSG frontman, who opened up his body before curling a right-footed effort into the far corner and send Portugal home.
