Jake Hesketh netted a superb second-half strike as Burton Albion advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

The Saints youngster met Scott Fraser’s back-post cross on the volley, smashing home clinically to make the scores 3-1 on the night at the Pirelli Stadium.

It is the second time in the space of just over a week that the midfielder has chipped in for the Brewers, weaving through the Portsmouth defence to score in their League One meeting at Fratton Park last Tuesday in similarly spectacular fashion.

The home side took the lead seven minutes into the second half when Fraser's long-range shot spun off Forest defender Saidy Janko and past Jason Steele.

Fraser then doubled the advantage 12 minutes later with a cool finish from Liam Boyce's pass before Forest substitute Lewis Grabban turned home Gil Dias’s through ball to bring the away side back into the game.

Hesketh’s volley proved to be the decisive goal as Arvin Appiah converted in stoppage time to set up a nervy finish and give Forest hope of forcing penalties.

There was no denying Burton however, who held on to secure a 3-2 victory and a debut appearance in the last eight.
