Jannik Vestergaard was determined to seize his chance after being given the opportunity to impress in last night’s Carabao Cup tie at Leicester.

The giant Dane, making his first appearance in two months, played a key role as Saints produced an improved defensive display at the King Power Stadium, restricting their hosts in front of goal.

Ultimately it would prove in vain, as the Foxes progressed to the quarter-finals on penalties, but Vestergaard was encouraged by his personal contribution in helping the team to a clean sheet, before converting Saints’ fourth spot-kick.

“Not playing is not very easy when that’s what you’ve left your home and your family to do,” he revealed.

“That is one of the things you have to deal with as a footballer, and work on getting better and improving.

“When you get a chance, you have to grab it and make sure you show the manager and the team that they can rely on you, so I’m pleased with that.”

Next up is a return to Premier League action with the visit of Manchester United to St Mary’s, and Vestergaard believes Saints can take heart from the way they kept the Foxes at bay.

“Obviously Manchester United bring world-class players, but I think Vardy has had a good season or two in the Premier League, and Demarai Gray hurt us in the first game,” he added.

“With Iheanacho and Okazaki as well, they are all very good players and we held them to a minimum.

“We need to take that with us and try to copy that against Manchester United, who are a world-class side.”
