Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce that young full-back Yan Valery has signed a new, long-term contract with the club.

The 20-year-old today put pen to paper on a deal that runs until 2023, capping a period of incredible progression over the past few months in which he has become an integral member of Ralph Hasenhüttl’s squad and established himself as a regular in the first-team line-up.
Valery’s performances were highlighted by a stunning first senior goal at Manchester United this month, as well as a crucial equaliser in last weekend’s 2-1 home victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

he is a player who embodies precisely the philosophy of southampton.

The youngster represents another major success story from the club’s Academy, having developed rapidly under the guidance of Southampton’s Professional Development Phase coaches since the club’s scouting team identified and recruited him from French side Rennes in 2015, at the age of 16.
Valery, who has represented France at Under-17s level and was quickly promoted from the Under-18 squad to the Under-23s at Saints following his arrival, made his senior debut in the League Cup tie at Leicester last November, before his first Premier League appearance followed in the 2-2 home draw with Manchester United a few days later.
He has not only remained involved ever since, but has gone on to become Hasenhüttl’s first choice at right-back, with 16 top-flight appearances now under his belt.

Ralph Hasenhüttl said: “Yan’s development has been fantastic in the last few months. I think he is a player who embodies precisely the philosophy of Southampton, as he is young and forward-thinking.
“He has been given trust by us, and in return he has shown exactly what we want to see, which is a brave player who believes in himself and is willing to work on his deficits to get better.
“Already you can see Yan has improved defensively, and his goals against teams like Manchester United and Tottenham are big signs of how much his confidence has been growing.
“Players like Yan are the future of Southampton Football Club, not just the present, so I am very pleased for him and for us that he has signed this new contract.”

Yan Valery said: "It's a big step. It proves the club believe in me, and I am really proud and happy to sign again for this club.

“It is the club that gave me my chance. This manager has given me all of his trust, so I am just happy to sign again and I can't wait now to give everything I've got to help the club stay in the Premier League and to keep working hard and improve my game and be a better player than I am now.”
