Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl believes Yan Valery is a perfect example of The Southampton Way in action.

The 20-year-old this week signed a new contract that runs until 2023, following a memorable few months for him in which he has emerged as a first-team regular under the Saints boss.

The Academy graduate's progression was highlighted particularly in the past few weeks, with a series of eye-catching displays and a pair of memorable goals – one a sensational long-range strike away to Manchester United and the other a crucial equaliser in the 2-1 home victory over Tottenham.

"I am very happy first that he has made good development in the last month," said Hasenhüttl. "He has got a lot of trust from my side and he grabbed the chance with both hands.

"His development was good, so it's a very important sign for us as a club and for him that he signs a new contract."

As for how far he can still go, Hasenhüttl said: "It depends on his work and his ability, but we see Yan working very hard and working on his deficits he still has in his game.

"But I think he is a perfect example of The Southampton Way that we want to go in.

"We don't want to overload him with too much pressure, but he has shown also in the bigger games that he is able to bring a good performance and also scoring against big teams.

"It is the next step in his development and he showed it, and that's the logical reason that we tried to extend his contract."

Valery is not the only Academy product to have thrived under Hasenhüttl, and the Saints boss hopes that players in the youth teams are aware of the potential opportunities available to them.

"I think it's an important sign also for our Academy that we are looking on these guys and we are giving them a chance to play," he said.

"It's not possible to bring immediately five or six young players into the first XI, but always one or two get the chance to play and we have to have a look on them, that's important.

"Sometimes it can be they also play again in the Under-23s, but if they make a big step in the first XI then it's a good sign for them and I think that gives you the motivation to work harder than before."
