Ralph Hasenhüttl reflected on a ‘crazy game’ after a 3-3 draw with AFC Bournemouth at St Mary’s secured Premier League football for the 2019/20 campaign.

In a pulsating affair, Saints led twice. First Shane Long scored to make it three consecutive home Premier League goals for the first time in his career, before the visitors responded with strikes from Dan Gosling and Callum Wilson.

James Ward-Prowse levelled things up at 2-2 before Matt Targett’s first-ever Saints goal looked to have sealed victory, only for Wilson’s second to ensure a share of the spoils. That though, coupled with Cardiff’s 1-0 defeat at Fulham, was enough to ensure safety.

“We are very happy and also proud for this game. It was a crazy game with ups and downs, a fantastic start, then a time where we concede two goals which didn’t look very good for us,” Hasenhüttl began.

“With a few changes at the break we came back into the game and took a one-goal lead then at the end we are lucky that we get the point.

“We had a lot of chances in the second-half and I think the second-half was really good.

“We lost two points which is a pity but today it was more important to be safe. We know we still have a few weaknesses in our game, we have to develop a few things that aren’t perfect at the moment. But that's the Premier League and today it was a tactical and very intensive game.

“I think, although we didn’t win today, it was a very important step for us because now we are safe. We can enjoy the next two games and look forward to next season.”
