Josh Sims and England U20s are facing an early elimination from the Toulon tournament after losing for the second time in a row, this time to Portugal by three goals to two on Tuesday evening.

A 2-1 defeat to Japan over the weekend left Paul Simpson’s side in desperate need of a win and they started brightly enough thanks to Eddie Nketiah’s opener inside 10 minutes.

Goals for Marcos Paulo, Felix Correia and Goncalo Cardoso however took the game beyond the Young Lions before Joe Willock added a late consolation strike four minutes from time. A missed penalty from Embalò prevented the Portuguese from restoring their two-goal advantage in stoppage time.

Saints’ Sims started on the left of a 4-3-3 on the night, featuring for 69 minutes before being substituted for West Brom’s Kyle Edwards as England chased the game.

Seven-time winners England face Chile playing only for pride in their final group fixture on Friday 7th June.
