Jan Bednarek feels Southampton can become a “nasty opponent” when they find the perfect balance to their pressing.
Saints rounded pre-season off with a 2-0 victory over 1.FC Köln at St Mary’s, thanks to a Danny Ings penalty and a second-half strike from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
The penalty came after just three minutes, adding to a number of fast starts during pre-season, and Bednarek believes that to be a promising sign ahead of the Premier League.
“It’s one of the aspects we’ve been working on. We are happy that from the beginning we are focused and we can score a goal and defend well,” he said.
“I think it’s just to find the balance between high press, deep pressing and midfield press because there were some moments of the game where we could not press but we tried to do, we are sometimes a little bit too brave.
“I think that’s positive and when we find the balance we will be a really nasty opponent.”
He added: “It’s the perfect way to say hello to our fans today with two goals and a clean sheet. We are looking forward to the season and I think they are too.
“That’s the best thing, everyone wants to go up and be a very good team. We want everyone to be afraid of Southampton Football Club.”
