Ings lauds Saints' support

Boyhood Southampton fan Danny Ings paid tribute to the supporters who travelled to witness an historic south coast derby win at Fratton Park.

Saints had not recorded a victory in the fixture since 2005, and not won on Portsmouth soil since 1984, so Ings was the taste of his home city after his two-goal first half set Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men on their way.

The eventual 4-0 scoreline went beyond the expectations of many, despite the two leagues between the clubs, and Ings was quick to thank the Saints fans who roared their side on.

“It’s a great night for all of us – players, coaching staff and fans,” he said.

“It’s huge. We knew that going into it, so it was important we did everything in this game and we did – for everybody at the club.

“These games can always be intimidating for the fans coming to an away fixture in a derby.

“I’ve seen it over the years in other derby games, so credit to the fans who came and got behind us from start to finish.

“We could hear them all night, and we really have to thank them.”
